Highlights of the October 23, 2004 Fall meeting.

The meeting kicked off with the Continental Breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and was followed by Michael Johnson, OTC, giving the "Opening Remarks". Dr. Jones gave a very entertaining lecture on his experiences volunteering his time and skill to treat indigent people in Vietnam. He goes every couple of years and looks forward to each visit. If there was anybody who was not fired up to go volunteer for something by Dr. Jones' lecture it could only mean that they weren't there. The next lecture was from Dr. Casey. His lecture was on his  many years and many cases  he was involved in. Dr. Casey's informative lecture was followed by the morning break. The morning break was the perfect time to visit with the vendors who are always there to support our meetings. The latest and greatest orthopaedic innovations were demonstrated and explained by the vendors. After the break was a most interesting lecture on "Developing a Surgical Conscience" given by Robert Franceschiello, RN. This lecture was particularly inspiring to everyone who is going into surgery. Every operating room has an R.N., like Robert, who pays close attention to what is going on as far as maintaining sterile conditions go. Roberts lecture was followed by Jack Hart, OTC, giving his lecture on "Basic Casting". At every meeting there are tech.'s who are new to the field and the "Basic Casting" lecture is always very informative to them. Jacks lecture was followed by lunch which was generously provided by Linvatech. Lunch consisted of broiled chicken, rice, salad, soft drinks, and pita bread. "DELICIOUS"!
After lunch a raffle was held and there were sports bags, movie tickets, and a gift certificate for the "Good Guys Electronics" given away to the attendees thanks to our loyal supporters. Following the raffle there was an in-depth lecture and demonstration of knee and shoulder scopes, by a representative from Linvatech, with a hands-on demonstration so the attendees could get their hands on the scopes and try them out on the shoulder and knee models. In the "real world" very few Ortho. Tech.'s get their hands on this very expensive and very fragile equipment. It was really cool. If you miss a meeting you are missing a lot! The C.E.U.'S  were handed out at the end of the meeting just prior to going home.

I can't say enough to thank everyone who is involved in the planning and execution of our meetings. THANK-YOU! Most folks who show up for the Updates come early, eat breakfast and network before the meetings. What a way to start your day. You are surrounded by your colleagues who are as eager as you to upgrade their skills and take home some valuable information to use in your doctor's practice to add value to yourself and to keep your skills on the cutting edge. "CONGRATULATIONS". For those of you who are unable to attend the annual Symposiums put on by the N.A.O.T. this is the only way for you to bank those C.E.U.'S to maintain your certification. Re-taking the certification test is not going to be an option after we finally achieve "State Licensure". Ask around and see if ANY healthcare professionals, outside of Orthopaedic Technology, are re-taking their boards every cycle instead of exposing themselves to new ideas and concepts. If you start attending meetings now you will be putting yourself on the right track and in a good position to help us grow the A.O.T.C. into the largest and most pro-active N.A.O.T. chapter in America. We have a long way to go and with your help we are going there.

SEE YOU AT THE NEXT MEETING!

Best regards,
Troy Fite, OTC
Vice President / A.O.T.C.
