Highlights of the "Spring 2001 Meeting".

On April 7, 2001, the Association of Orthopaedic Technologists California (AOTC) held its annual spring educational meeting. Once again the AOTC Update was a great educational experience and was attended by 65 Orthopaedic Technologists, Radiological Technologists, Nurses, and students from the local Ortho Tech programs. We had Raul Sanchez an AOTC member come from San Francisco to attend our meeting and members come up from San Diego.    The AOTC would like to welcome those 10 new members that joined the AOTC at the meeting.
The AOTC would like to thank Danny Corpuz of Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Harbor City, California for coordinating our educational meeting as well as Kaiser Permanente for opening their doors once again to host our meeting. Also, I would like to thank Troy Fite Vice President of the AOTC for assisting with the meeting.
The meeting kicked off with Dr. Navarro, an Orthopaedic surgeon from Kaiser, speaking on analgesics for Osteoarthritis of the knee.
Dr. Michael Strauss, orthopaedic surgeon and medical advisor of the AOTC, followed with his presentation on Orthopaedic Emergencies. This was an excellent presentation for those Orthopaedic Technologists working in the emergency setting in hospitals. The morning presentations finished with two informative topics from Frank Perreault, OTC speaking on the Orthopaedic Technologist in the Operating Room and Dr. Hedgecock on neurodiagnostic testing.
After the first two presenters there was a breaktime to visit the exhibitor rooms to check out the latest in orthopaedic soft goods and casting material. The AOTC would like to thank the exhibitors that displayed their products. The exhibitors were, Ken Hawkins and Nick Ortega from Smith & Nephew, Michelle Rizzo of Smith & Nephew, Jan Cohen of DePuy Orthotech/J&J, Rick Stone of Ezy Wrap, Elizabeth Perreault of Total Neurodiagnostic Testing, Kevin DeBence of Orthopaedic Medical Supplies, Linda Simmons of 3M, David Yi and Daniel Kim of Meditech Marketing, Pamela Trainer of Donjoy, and Dennis Ayotte of Bledsoe Braces. The participation of the exhibitors helped to make our meeting a great success. Also, I would like to thank those that donated gifts for our raffle prizes throughout the meeting and thanks to Jennifer Angeloff of Royce Medical Products and Thomas Nomura of Hanger Prosthetics that were unable to attend but donated prizes as well for our meeting.
The afternoon session was a great educational workshop. We had the privilege of having Ken Hawkins, Smith & Nephews top orthopaedic technical consultant on splinting and casting, come to our meeting. Ken's informative and tip worthy presentation on splinting and casting was terrific for the beginner and experienced Orthopaedic Technologist. I have seen Ken a number of times at meetings and everytime I learn something new from him. I would like to thank Smith & Nephew for having Ken travel to California to be an instructional presenter at our meeting and teaching us the latest techniques with Smith & Nephews splinting and casting line of products.
Our meeting was sponsored by Smith & Nephew casting division. I would like to thank Nancy Roth of Smith & Nephew for working with the AOTC in sponsoring the meeting as well as Nick Ortega and Nick Ortega local representatives of Smith & Nephew as well. With their support of our meeting it was a great educational event, from the speakers to the splinting and casting workshop in the afternoon.
For those that did not have a chance to attend the AOTC spring educational meeting which offered 6 continuing educational units, free registration, great raffle prizes, food and fun, and truly an educational experience, you missed out. Don't miss out next time, join the AOTC and be informed, up to date, and attend some great educational meetings like this one sponsored by Smith & Nephew.
Join the AOTC and get educated and have fun!

Sincerely, Jack Hart, OTC
